New Christmas stamps bring back classic holiday tunes

Christmas is still a couple of months away, but the new stamps inspired by Christmas songs to accompany your holiday greetings launch tomorrow. Eesti Posts’ member of the management board and head of postal business Kaida Kauler encourages everyone to gather everything necessary for sending holiday cards early so that during the peak season you only need to post the cards.

This year's Christmas stamps are inspired by the well-known tunes 'Jingle bells' and 'O Christmas tree'. Holiday greetings sent within Estonia will arrive with a glittering stamp depicting golden bells. The stamp intended for international letters has an image of a Christmas tree.

"The aim of a beautiful Christmas stamp is to encourage people to send holiday cards and letters to their loved ones," Kauler said and added that this year's stamps stand out thanks to a special printing technique. Namely, certain parts of the stamps designed by artist Indrek Ilves are glittering and sparkling, making the season's greetings even more festive.

Stamps for national shipments with a nominal value of €0.90 are sold as single stamps and as a block. Additionally, a set including four Christmas envelopes and four stamps is available. Stamp for international letters costs 1.90€.

First day covers are launched on 15 October along with the stamps, and the first day stamp is used at the Toompea post office. The Christmas collection products are available from the Omniva e-shop in addition to the post offices. Considering the COVID-19 situation, it is wise to consider spreading out Christmas shopping over a longer period to avoid densely populated shopping centres during the holiday season. Therefore, according to Kauler, it is now more important that ever to buy Christmas stamps and cards at the office or from the e-shop in advance.

Eesti Post has issued special Christmas stamps in previous years as well and, regardless of the generally declining letter volumes, sending Christmas cards continues to be popular. When Estonia's first gingerbread-scented postage stamp was issued in 2016, interest was unexpectedly high and the stamps quickly sold out. This was followed by several scented Christmas stamps, however last year the postal organisation launched the first-ever velvet felt Christmas stamp.

"Even those who have not sent letters or cards for years want to do so during the holiday season. Thus, we recommend buying Christmas stamps early on to make sure that all holiday greetings reach friends and family," Kauler said.
