Mulk Culinary Masterpiece from Cabbage Featured on a Postage Stamp

Today, June 2, Omniva released a new postage stamp dedicated to a culinary masterpiece from the Mulk region – mulgikapsad (Mulk-style stewed sauerkraut with barley and pork). The stamp is part of the “Good Estonian Things” series, designed by Jaan Saar.

“Last year, the rye bread stamp in the same series became extremely popular. This year, another of our national dishes – mulgikapsad – was chosen as a worthy addition. National culinary delights are a popular theme among stamp collectors worldwide,” said Hannes Nagel, Head of Philately at Omniva.

While ancient Estonians perfected the art of baking rye bread over a millennium ago, another culinary gem comes from a smaller South Estonian tribe – the Mulks. When land ownership became possible in the late 19th century, a great migration began, spreading Mulk food culture across Estonia. Thanks to the openness and vitality of the Mulks, dishes like mulgikapsad found their way onto every Estonian’s table. This combination – authentic local flavor shared with those who believed in good food and community – is why the dish is listed as part of Estonia’s intangible cultural heritage and rightfully considered a national dish.

The mulgikapsad stamp costs €1.30 and is valid for domestic mail in Estonia until July 1. The print run is 30,000 copies. The stamp is available in Omniva’s e-shop and post offices across Estonia. The official First Day Stamp is used at the Tallinna Kaubamaja post office.

In 2025, Omniva will issue 30 stamps celebrating significant national and societal events. Omniva’s stamps are printed at Vaba Maa printing house, using FSC-certified paper to ensure responsible forestry practices.
