Omniva commemorates the early days of public transport in Estonia with a thematic envelope
On 19 January, Omniva will issue a thematic first day envelope together with two standard postage stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of OÜ Mootor, once the largest transport company in Estonia. The issuehighlights the role of public transport and connections in Estonia’s cultural memory and in the everyday life of the young Republic of Estonia.
Founded in Tallinn in 1926, OÜ Mootor operated between 1926 and 1940 and became Estonia’s largest transport company by the 1930s, employing over 300 people. The company served both Tallinn city routes and long-distancelines and ranked among the largest transport enterprises of its kind in the Baltic region. Its activities came to an end in 1940 following nationalisation.
“Both postage stamps and first day covers are cultural carriers – they preserve and bring into view stories that help us understand how our society has taken shape. With this thematic envelope, we look back to a time when publictransport connected people and regions and supported the daily functioning of a young state,” said Hannes Nagel, Head of Philately at Omniva.
The reverse side of the thematic envelope features a 51-seat Scania-Vabis bus No. 94 operating on the Nõmme line in 1938. The front shows a map of Estonia within its 1929 borders, illustrating the bus routes of the time and howwidely they connected different regions. As a distinctive feature, a tyre-shaped first day stamp is used for the first time. Designed specifically for this issue, the stamp symbolises movement and the road network.
The thematic envelope is issued with two Estonian standard postage stamps. The orange stamp, priced at €3.90 with a print run of 30,000, is suitable for international mail. The purple stamp, priced at €0.50 with a print run of 30,000, is intended to be combined with lower-denomination stamps. The print run of the envelope is 800 copies.
The thematic envelope and stamps will be available from 19 January in the Omniva e-shop and post offices across Estonia. The first day special stamp will be available at the Tallinn Kaubamaja post office.
In 2026, Omniva will issue 46 stamps celebrating significant national and societal events. Omniva’s stamps are printed at Vaba Maa printing house, using FSC-certified paper to ensure responsible forestry practices.
