New Postage Stamp Released in Memory of Cultural Historian and Theologian Vello Salo
Omniva is releasing today, October 3, a new postage stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vello Salo – a cleric, theologian, translator and cultural historian. The stamp is part of the popular “Great Estonians” series and was designed by artist Triin Heimann.
Vello Salo (1925–2019) was a cleric, theologian, translator and cultural historian whose life’s work connected Estonian culture, science and literature. For many years he led the Pirita Convent, translated the Bible as well as works of world literature, and published essays and memoirs. Salo considered it essential that culture and faith foster mutual understanding between peoples. His activities helped preserve and enrich the Estonian language and promoted an open, value-based way of thinking that continues to inspire future generations.
“Religion has appeared on our postage stamps for the second time this year – in early September we issued a stamp dedicated to Blessed Martyr Eduard Profittlich, which proved to be exceptionally popular. Now it is Vello Salo’s turn, whose legacy has clearly stood out in Estonia’s cultural history. Religion has been part of the formation of our society, and reflecting it on postage stamps helps to present the many cultural and historical layers that have shaped Estonia,” said Hannes Nagel, Head of Philately at Omniva.
The Vello Salo stamp has a nominal value of €1.50 valid for domestic mail in Estonia. The print run is 12,000. The stamp and first day cover will be available from Wednesday, October 3, in Omniva’s e-shop and at post offices across EstoniaThe official First Day Stamp is used at the Tallinn Kaubamaja post office
In 2025, Omniva will issue 30 stamps celebrating significant national and societal events. Omniva’s stamps are printed at Vaba Maa printing house, using FSC-certified paper to ensure responsible forestry practices.
