Lääne-Nigula becomes Estonia’s first municipality with a dense network close to home parcel machines

Omniva is installing nine new parcel machines in cooperation with the Lääne-Nigula municipal government. This will increase the number of Omniva parcel machines in the municipality from six to fifteen, making Lääne-Nigula the first municipality in Estonia to have a parcel machine in every local centre.

Lääne-Nigula currently has six Omniva parcel machines: Risti, Taebla, Pürksi and Nõva, along with the new Martna vallamaja and Kullamaa vallamaja machines, which opened in May.

“The new lockers in Kullamaa and Martna quickly saw heavy use, with demand exceeding their capacity. This showed that the area needed more parcel lockers close to people’s homes. We contacted the Lääne-Nigula municipal government, which helped us secure suitable installation sites for the new parcel machines,” said Tanel Raun, Head of Omniva’s Parcel Locker Network.

As a result of the cooperation, Omniva will install nine additional parcel machines in Lääne-Nigula during September and October:

  • Kullamaa Goldenbecki maja parcel machine (installed)
  • Linnamäe Oru kultuurisaali parcel machine
  • Linnamäe LASi maja parcel machine
  • Rõude külamaja parcel machine
  • Nigula infotahvli parcel machine
  • Liivi raamatukogu parcel machine
  • Palivere – 2 parcel machines
  • Koluvere parcel machine

“We are pleased that the parcel locker network is expanding and that receiving parcels will become more convenient throughout the municipality. This is particularly important for people living in sparsely populated areas, who need to be able to collect their parcels close to home and at a time that suits them,” said Janno Randmaa, Mayor of Lääne-Nigula.

The lockers can be used to receive parcels and to send them both within Estonia and internationally. Parcels can be registered in Omniva’s self-service environment via the mobile app or at minu.omniva.ee. Customers should write the parcel number on the parcel by hand. There is no need to print an address label, as the courier will attach it to the parcel.

In the self-service environment, customers can see all their outgoing and incoming parcels, track their journey and expected arrival time, change the parcel’s delivery point, extend its storage period, register a return and more.

Omniva’s network expansion

“Omniva’s goal is to develop a dense close-to-home parcel machine network. We are working towards a future where every community in Estonia has a parcel machine. Lääne-Nigula is the first municipality where this vision is largely becoming a reality,” Tanel Raun said.

Omniva is investing in approximately 600 smaller parcel machines in 2026 and 2027 for installation in local communities across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

“We started the network expansion by installing individual parcel machines in different locations. Usage data from the first 40 machines showed that a single machine may not have enough capacity to meet local demand when there are no other machines nearby to share the parcel volume. We have therefore decided to test an area-by-area approach, developing one municipality’s parcel machine network as a whole,” Raun explained.

“Lääne-Nigula is the first municipality where we are testing this new approach. We are also preparing pilots in two other municipalities. These pilots will allow us to assess usage and determine what network density, machine capacity and service model best meet people’s needs while remaining economically sustainable. We will use the results to refine the model and decide how to proceed with further network expansion,” Raun added.

The installation of individual parcel machines is currently paused pending the results of the area-by-area rollout pilots.
