Estonian sports legend Georg Lurich featured on a postage stamp
On 22 April, Omniva will issue a stamp sheet dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Georg Lurich’s birth, commemorating one of the legends of sports history and a key figure in shaping Estonian national identity. The stamp was designed by artist Riho Luuse.
Georg Lurich was one of the most renowned Estonian wrestlers and a key figure in the development of national self-awareness, whose international success brought widespread recognition to Estonia. Born in 1876, Lurich represented Estonia in international competitions at a timewhen the country’s independence was still taking shape, serving as an example in preserving national identity.
Lurich’s life and achievements have inspired Estonians for more than a century, symbolising perseverance, determination, and strength of will. His legacy continues to resonate today, inspiring both sports enthusiasts and the wider public.
“Georg Lurich is not only a great figure in sports history, but also a symbol who helped shape Estonian national identity. The stamp sheet dedicated to Lurich helps bring this story into the present day and reminds us of the importance of preserving and passing on our sporting rolemodels,” said Hannes Nagel, Head of Philately at Omniva.
The stamp sheet is priced at €5.90 and is suitable for international mailing. The print run is limited to 5,000 copies. It is available at Omniva’s online store and post offices across Estonia. A first-day cancellation mark will be used at the Tallinn Kaubamaja post office.
In 2026, Omniva will issue 46 postage stamps highlighting important themes and events in Estonian history and culture. Omniva’s stamps are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)- certified paper, ensuring that the wood used in production comes from responsibly managedforests.
