A century-long story of academic women featured on a postage stamp
On 15 May, Omniva will issue a postage stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Estonian Association of Academic Women, honouring the century-long contribution of academic women to Estonia’s education, science and social development.
Founded in Tartu in 1926, the Estonian Association of Academic Women (EAAW) was established on the belief that the knowledge, determination and sense of responsibility of educated women enrich society as a whole. Over the decades, the association has supportedwomen’s higher education, upheld the ideals of academic freedom and professional ethics, and strengthened the connections between academic women in Estonia and internationally.
Estonian women scholars have helped shape a knowledge-based Estonia by opening new perspectives and carrying forward knowledge even in difficult times. The anniversary stamp is a tribute to all the women whose work and intellectual contribution have kept alive the lightof Estonian education, science and spiritual independence.
“It is important for Omniva that postage stamps tell meaningful stories about Estonian society and culture. The century-long contribution of the Estonian Association of Academic Women to education, science and social development is part of Estonia’s intellectual continuity and deserves recognition on a postage stamp. Throughout history, educated and accomplished women have helped shape a knowledge-based Estonia through dedication and perseverance, by being open to new solutions and having the courage to take responsibility,” said Katri Laanela, Head of Postal Services at Omniva.
The ancient oil lamp depicted on the anniversary stamp symbolises the light of knowledge, education and intellectual continuity. The stamp was designed by Birgit Pajust, Riina Saarna and Randel Saarna.
The stamp costs €1.80 and is suitable for domestic mail. The print run is 5,000 copies. The stamp is available at Omniva’s online shop and post offices across Estonia. The first day cancellation mark will be available at the Tallinn Kaubamaja post office.
In 2026, Omniva will issue 46 postage stamps highlighting important themes and events in the history and culture of the Estonian state and society. Omniva’s postage stamps are printed on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring that the wood used forthe paper originates from responsibly managed forests.
