Reminder: 7 calendar days to pick up parcels from machine

The approaching busy season for the parcel world is a good time to remind everyone that parcels sent to machines are available for pickup for seven days.
The head of Omniva Estonia’s Parcel Business Area, Martin Luts, says preparations for Christmas start at Omniva already in August. “On the basis of many years of experience, we know that the Christmas rush for us doesn’t occur in December but already by October at the latest,” said Luts.
Luts says that Omniva has implemented a string of improvements and changes in the process for this year’s parcel season and thanks to this, the network will be able to cope with what are forecasted to be record volumes. The rest of the responsibility lies with customers, says Luts – they shouldn’t wait too long to pick up their parcels.
“We’ve planned our parcel network operations so as to allow us to manage even record volumes as long as people don’t leave their orders to the last minute and also pick up their incoming parcels in a timely manner,” he said. “We have expanded our parcel machine network significantly and we have the technological capabilities to direct package flows as needed.“
Statistics show that people are actually quite quick to come and claim their parcels – over one-half of people pick them up the same day they get the notification. Three-quarters of parcels are claimed within 24 hours.
Among other things, statistics show that the most popular day of the week for picking up parcels is Tuesday with the hours between 5 and 6 pm the peak time. “This is logical – most people will go get their parcel right after the work day and they do this along with their grocery shopping,“ Luts added.
It is also surprising that over 10% of the total customers pick up their parcels between the hours of 9 pm and 9 am.
Unlike post offices, picking up parcels from a machine is made easier by the personal parcel code. If need be, the recipient can send their son or daughter or partner to pick up the package, since no ID is needed. In addition, the parcel machine is available at all times, regardless of the day of the week and time of day.
With the end of the year approaching, Omniva is making a point to remind customers that they shouldn’t wait until the last minute to order Christmas gifts. “If you are ordering from somewhere farther like China, plan on as much as two months for delivery. For Europe, it’ll likely be somewhat shorter,” says Luts, who said customers should remember that the flood of parcels in December also has an impact on e-stores’ goods in stock and the rest of the international supply chain, so make those Christmas purchases early.
